Pera marsh This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2002 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT breeding (2002) 1–2 pairs B2, C6
Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio LC resident (2000) 6–10 pairs C6
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC passage (2001) 30 birds B1i, B2, C6
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC winter (2001) 30 birds B1i, B2, C6
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (2001) 4–6 pairs C6
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea LC breeding (2001) 3–7 pairs C6
Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus LC resident (2001) 300 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2002. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 not assessed very high not assessed
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset -

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development likely in short term (<4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Pollution happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place not assessed
