Patho Plains This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Plains-wanderer Pedionomus torquatus EN resident 1998 120-500 individuals A1
Diamond Firetail Stagonopleura guttata VU resident 1990-2000 520 A1

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2009) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2018) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2018 very unfavourable very high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat -

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland very poor (< 40%) poor (40-69%) very unfavourable
Forest poor (40-69%) good (> 90%) unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications likely in short term (within 4 years) some of area/population (10-49%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Agricultural expansion and intensification likely in short term (within 4 years) majority/most of area/population (50-90%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Climate change and severe weather likely in short term (within 4 years) whole area/population (>90%) moderate to rapid deterioration high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Some of site covered (10-49%) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented medium
