Site description (1999 baseline):

Site location and context

Located around 21 km north of Bondowoso and described as one of the remaining site with natural monsoon forest in Java.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Panthera pardus, Sus verrucosus and Trachypithecus auratus (Nijman personal observation., Setiawan 1994).

Habitat and land use

Natural monsoon forest (MacKinnon et.al.1982, Whitten et.al.1982), lowland rainforest and lower mountain rainforest (Whitten et.al.1996). Pasir Putih vegetation type dominated by teak forest (Tectona grandis) (Setiawan 1994).

Protected areas

Gunung Besar and Gunung Ringgit proposed as nature reserve.
