Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Shallow fjords with small islets, saltmarshes and cultivated land including large reclaimed areas near Overgaard. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in Northern Kattegat (site 119).



Key biodiversity
The site is of high importance for wintering Cygnus cygnus. Many bird populations are shared with Northern Kattegat (IBA 119). Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna hirundo and S. paradisaea, all listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.



Protected areas
National Low International High7,500 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Randers and Mariager Fjord and ålborg Bugt, 39,040 ha). 7,500 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Randers and Mariager Fjords and adjacent coastal waters, 41,440 ha).
