CL113
Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2020 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Southern Rockhopper Penguin Eudyptes chrysocome VU resident (2016–2020) 301 birds A1
Magellanic Penguin Spheniscus magellanicus LC resident (2016–2020) 67–1,110 birds B1a
Sooty Shearwater Ardenna grisea NT breeding (2016–2020) 1,000–100,000 birds B1a
Striated Caracara Phalcoboenus australis NT resident (2006) present A1, A2
Black Cinclodes Cinclodes maculirostris NT resident (2008) present A2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2020. The most recent assessment (2015) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2015 good low medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland - good (>90%) good
Marine Coastal/Supratidal - good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
