Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A mosaic of aapa mires and old-growth forests, with numerous lakes, ponds and rivers in southern Kuusamo. The forests hold very old trees and large amounts of both standing and fallen dead wood. The area has mostly remained untouched by human activities.
An important breeding area for boreal birds.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is a candidate SAC.

International High1,356 ha of IBA covered by Peatland Reserve (Isosuo-Kivisuo, 1,356 ha). 5,793 ha of IBA covered by 2 Special Protection Areas (Isosuo-Kivisuo; Etelä-Kuusamon vanhat metsät).
