Paimionlahti bay

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A long, narrow, highly eutrophic bay at the mouth of the Paimio river. The bay is surrounded mainly by forests and scrub, with some farmland and settlements. Along the shores the meadows are grazed, which has increased the ornithological importance of the area.

Key biodiversity
An important staging area for waterbirds.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Fishing causes minor disturbance, but continuous recreational boating from a small harbour upriver seriously disturbs birds in the bay, especially staging wildfowl. Abandonment of grazing in some parts of the site have detrimentally affected habitats for birds.

Protected areas
National Low International High7 ha of IBA covered by Protected Area on Private Land (Paimionlahti, 7 ha). 696 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Paimionlahti).
