MK019
Ovche Pole

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca VU resident (2007) 12–15 pairs A1, B2
European Roller Coracias garrulus LC breeding (2006) 10–30 pairs A1, B2
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni LC breeding (2003) 200–250 pairs A1, B2
Lesser Grey Shrike Lanius minor LC breeding (2006) 30–100 pairs B2

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population unknown

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni 10 / 120 (pairs) 9 very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Artificial/Terrestrial 85 Arable land; Other urban and industrial areas; Perennial crops, orchards and groves
Forest 4 Broadleaved deciduous woodland; Native coniferous woodland
