Ortau upland massif

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2007 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Steppe Eagle Aquila nipalensis EN breeding (2007) 2–4 pairs A3
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca VU breeding (2007) 3–6 pairs A1, A3
Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus LC breeding (2007) 180–210 pairs A4ii
Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus NT breeding (2007) 2,200–2,600 pairs A1, A3
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni LC breeding (2007) 280–300 pairs A1
Saker Falcon Falco cherrug EN breeding (2007) 20–25 pairs A1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2007. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.
