Orobie Alps and pre-Alps


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A subalpine, mountainous area in the south-central Alps. It includes the southern part of low Valtellina and the high parts of Val Brembana, Val Seriana and Val di Scalve. Extensive broadleaved and coniferous woodlands, alpine grasslands and rocky areas predominate. The main land-uses are linked to nature conservation and to agriculture and forestry in mountain habitats.



Key biodiversity
The area is important for five of the 10 species of the Eurasian high-montane biome, and for Aquila chrysaetos.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
No major threats are present.



Protected areas
National High International None63,000 ha of IBA covered by Regional Nature Park (Orobie Bergamasche, 63,000 ha). 44,000 ha of IBA covered by Regional Nature Park (Orobie Valtellinesi, 44,000 ha).
