Oberlausitz heathland and fishponds biosphere reserve


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
An area with numerous fish-ponds and heathland, including two sites that were included in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989): `Teiche bei Königswartha' and `Teichgebiet Niederspree', former sites DD033 and DD034 in the then German Democratic Republic.



Key biodiversity
The site is important for breeding ducks and raptors. The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds on passage, on a regular basis. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
A management plan exists for the Biosphere Reserve. Threats include road construction, and waste dumping (`Other' threat).



Protected areas
National None International HighIBA overlaps with Biosphere Reserve and Special Protection Area.
