Site description (2000 baseline)
An area of wet grassland and alkaline fen with associated sand islands, the former being extensively grazed by cattle. One sand island in the Nauener Luch holds 28 ha of sewage-sludge ponds.
Key biodiversity
The site holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds, on a regular basis, and is also a major migratory bottleneck site, where up to 32,000 Grus grus regularly pass. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (4-6 breeding pairs) and Otis tarda (resident).
