Obarenes mountains


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A low mountain range to the west of Miranda del Ebro, which includes many cliffs and a small gorge. The main vegetation-types are scrub, grassland and Quercus and Fagus woodland. The area is used for livestock-farming, arable agriculture and hunting.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for cliff-nesting raptors.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Main threats are from the expansion of mining and from afforestation.



Protected areas
National None International Partial4,000 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Obarenes-Sierra de Cantabria, 5,350 ha).
