Site summary
The mountainous area of Nízke Tatry is very diverse and includes geographical units of Nízke Tatry, Starohorské vrchy and Kozie Chrbty. Forests in the north are composed primarily of conifers, whereas southern forests are predominantly deciduous. There is a high occurrence of rocky habitats in the area. Mountain meadows occur at higher altitudes in this zone. The area is used for forestry, hunting, and is well-known for recreational activities. Nízke Tatry is an important breeding site for birds of prey, forest owls and songbirds. It holds the most important population of Golden Eagle, Tengmalm’s Owl, and Little Owl in Slovakia. The area has a special significance for forest birds, including the largest populations of Capercaillie in the country. An intensive forestry and development related to tourism represent the main threats to birds in the area. The site is proposed as an SPA.
