Nærå Coast and Æbelø area


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A shallow sea area with islands and islets holding saltmarsh, and drained and cultivated areas with scattered habitation. Æbelø also supports smaller areas of woodland including some highly valuable old-growth Fagus-dominated forests with other species admixed (Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, Tilia platyphyllus (only site in Denmark), and Ilex aquifolium).



Key biodiversity
Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site. Numbers of wintering birds have for unknown reasons decreased since the site was designated as a Special Protection Area.



Protected areas
National None International High13,060 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Nærå coast and Æbelø area, 13,800 ha). 13,060 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Æbelø and the coast near Nærå, 13,060 ha).
