Site description (2000 baseline)
A shallow sea area with islands and islets holding saltmarsh, and drained and cultivated areas with scattered habitation. Æbelø also supports smaller areas of woodland including some highly valuable old-growth Fagus-dominated forests with other species admixed (Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, Tilia platyphyllus (only site in Denmark), and Ilex aquifolium).

Key biodiversity
Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site. Numbers of wintering birds have for unknown reasons decreased since the site was designated as a Special Protection Area.
