Novaraistis State Ornithological Reserve


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A bog which was formerly exploited for peat and then abandoned without any restorative measures being taken. It has now undergone some natural recovery, aided by the dam-creating activities of Eurasian beavers Castor fiber which are very common in the area.



Key biodiversity
The area is important for breeding Porzana porzana, for migrating Grus grus, and for moulting birds. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (a few calling males).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The site is covered by the national IBA monitoring network.



Protected areas
National High International None827 ha of IBA covered by Ornithological Reserve (Novaraistis, 827 ha).
