Northern Syros


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
The northern part of Syros and the surrounding rocky islets, characterized by coastal and inland cliffs, and dominated by phrygana. Human activities include livestock-farming, fishing and hunting.



Key biodiversity
An important site for passage raptors. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Pelecanus crispus (passage), Haliaeetus albicilla (passage), Larus audouinii (20 wintering individuals).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats to are from high hunting and grazing pressure.Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Low International None300 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Akro BD Pleura/Ano Syrou, 300 ha).
