ES325
North and east coasts of Minorca and island of Aire This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2011 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Scopoli's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea LC resident (2007) 666–2,272 pairs B1ii, B2, C2, C6
Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus CR breeding (2007) 205 pairs A1, A4ii, B1ii, B2, C1, C2, C6
European Shag Gulosus aristotelis LC resident (2006–2009) 148–193 pairs B1i, B3, C2, C6
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii VU breeding (2008) 404 pairs A1, A4i, B1i, B2, C1, C2, C6
Osprey Pandion haliaetus LC resident (2008) min 4 pairs C6
Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus EN resident (2008) min 12 pairs A1, B2, C1, C2, C6
Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus LC resident (2010) min 5 pairs C6
Red Kite Milvus milvus LC non-breeding (2010) present C6
Red Kite Milvus milvus LC resident (2010) present C6
Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus LC resident (2008) 11–22 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2011. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 very poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Calonectris diomedea 1,000 / 6,000 (pairs) 17 very poor
Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus 175 / 280 (pairs) 63 poor
European Shag Gulosus aristotelis 200 / 250 (pairs) 80 moderate
Audouin's Gull Larus audouinii 250 / 100 (pairs) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place low
