Site description (2008 baseline)
The North of Corvo and Faial Offshore IBA is located between the Western and Central Azores groups of islands, approximately 225 km from Corvo and 320km from Faial. This IBA is around 2,600 km2, and is located near a large seamount, just above the Rift area. It is also located where a mixing of cold and warm waters took place in the Azores EEZ, as shown by sea surface temperature images for June 2006 and July 2006. These transition areas are frequently associated with higher productivity and, consequently, in a higher concentration of prey.

Key biodiversity
Cory's Shearwater Calonectris diomedea: This species prompted classification of this IBA, due to the regular use of breeding population on Praia island (Graciosa) and Corvo. The birds that travelled to this area remained here for long periods of time and used it as a feeding and resting place, for up to 20 days. Other species observed in this IBA: No marine surveys were carried out in this area.
