Site description (2000 baseline)
A shallow, almost enclosed fjord area (connected to the open sea by sluices), surrounded by saltmarshes, meadows and agricultural land.

Key biodiversity
The site is an important staging ground for Mergus merganser in cold winters, when regular staging grounds elsewhere are covered in ice. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta and Sterna hirundo, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
