Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
The largest inland delta in Scandinavia, formed by the mouths of the Glomma, Leira and Nilelva rivers flowing into Lake Øyeren. The northern part is shallow, with inland areas covered by deciduous forest, scrub, grassland and agricultural land.
An important area for migrating waterbirds, and for swans
Cygnus in winter, as well as for breeding
Pandion haliaetus. Breeding species of global conservation concern which do not meet IBA criteria:
Crex crex (1-2 pairs).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Hunting disrupts and disturbs staging and wintering waterbirds significantly. Nordre Øyeren Bird Observatory has published reports dating back to 1976, and has carried out various projects, including studies of
Dendrocopos leucotos and systematic waterfowl surveys.
