Site location and context
Nevesinjsko polje is a karst polje located in Eastern Herzegovina. It is 24 km long and 8,5 km wide. This polje is surrounded by high mountains of Velež, Sniježnica, Glog, Nekudina, Mala ruda, Orlovica and Kruške. Flood area of this polje is about 16,64 km2 and there are few streams flowing on the surface of the polje, sinking at its S edge.
Biograd sink is the most important karstic phenomenon of the polje.
Tomb necropolis, prehistoric Illyrian forts, and prehistoric mounds - the so called tumulas are main cultural-historic features of this polje.
4 species of fish, and 18 species of dragonflies have been recorded in the polje. While the flora of polje has been well researched (271 species of plants divided into 5 habitat types), birds with 99 recorded species have been largely underresearched.
Nevesinjsko polje is an important area for migratory cranes Grus grus, lapwings Vanellus vanellus, turtle doves Streptopelia turtur, and meadow pipits Antus pratensis. Significant population of turtle doves breed here.
This polje is mainly used for agriculture (potato, cabbage and cereals) and to lesser extent livestock grazing.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Main threat to Nevesinjsko polje is Upper Horizons hydro-energy project. In this polje construction of Biograd sink and artificial lake in this are have already begun.

Nevesinjsko polje is located in Eastern Herzegovina and connected to the regional road Mostar – Nevesinje – Gacko.
