HR023
Neretva Delta

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC breeding (2010) 5–20 pairs C6
Little Crake Zapornia parva LC breeding (2010) 20–60 pairs C6
Baillon's Crake Zapornia pusilla LC breeding (2010) 10–20 pairs A4i, B1i, B2, C2, C6
Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris LC breeding (2010) 20–40 males C2, C6
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (2010) 150–200 pairs B2, C6
Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus LC breeding (2010) 2–4 pairs C6
Western Marsh-harrier Circus aeruginosus LC breeding (2010) 7–8 pairs C6
Lesser Grey Shrike Lanius minor LC breeding (2010) 80–120 pairs C6
Moustached Warbler Acrocephalus melanopogon LC winter (2010) 3,000–6,000 birds C2, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 not assessed very high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset unknown

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Invasive and other problematic species and genes likely in short term (<4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Natural system modifications likely in long term (>4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place very low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Marine Coastal/Supratidal major (>10)
Marine Intertidal major (>10)
