Site description (2007 baseline):
The western third of the island is raised reef, the remaining being basaltic lava and pyroclastics. The highest point is 517m asl. Native Kauri forest on the islands, unique to the area, have been selectively logged. Powerful cyclones hit the area approximately every 30 years, so considerable damage can occur to forests on a regular basis.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Threats may include Logging, Cyclones which hit the area fairly regularly (every 30 years on average) and Small scale forest loss to provide for Subsistence Farming.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
No conservation action to date. AMNH have made contact with several community groups in Late, capital of Nendo.
