Nawalparasi forests

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2005 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus NT non-breeding 2004 uncommon A1
Red-headed Vulture Sarcogyps calvus CR non-breeding 2004 uncommon A1
White-rumped Vulture Gyps bengalensis CR breeding 2002-2003 71 nests A1
Slender-billed Vulture Gyps tenuirostris CR non-breeding 2004 uncommon A1
Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus NT winter 2002 present A1
Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga VU winter 2004 present A1
Yellow-breasted Bunting Emberiza aureola CR winter 2004 present A1

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2005) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2005. The most recent assessment (2011) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2011 very unfavourable very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Reference Actual Units % remaining Result
White-rumped Vulture Gyps bengalensis 71 6 nests 9 very unfavourable

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest moderate (70-90%) moderate (70-90%) unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole area/population (>90%) moderate to rapid deterioration very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Residential and commercial development happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
