Nantha Island This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2012 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Bar-headed Goose Anser indicus LC winter 2008-2012 max 1,400 individuals A4i
Spoon-billed Sandpiper Calidris pygmaea CR winter 2008-2012 22-35 individuals A1, A4i
Spotted Greenshank Tringa guttifer EN winter 2008-2012 3-5 individuals A1

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2012) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2012. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 not assessed very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no unset medium

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of area/population (10-49%) very rapid to severe deterioration high
Climate change and severe weather happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Whole area of site (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
