Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A large area of mudflats with water-levels influenced by tidal changes.



Key biodiversity
The site holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds on a regular basis. This is one of the most important passage sites for Anas clypeata in north-western Europe.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The wetland is subject to infilling for industrial development. There are plans to artificially deepen the Elbe.



Protected areas
National None International High675 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Mühlenberger Loch, 675 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area.
