Mudgee-Wollar

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Regent Honeyeater Anthochaera phrygia CR resident (1996–2006) 50 birds A1
Rockwarbler Origma solitaria LC resident (1980–2008) common A2, A3
Diamond Firetail Stagonopleura guttata VU resident (1980–2008) uncommon A1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat -

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Climate change and severe weather happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Energy production and mining happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low

IBA Protection

Year Protected Area Designation (management category) % coverage of IBA
1987 Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve (Ia) 4
2015 Goulburn River National Park (II) 43

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Artificial/Terrestrial major (>10) Improved grassland & pasture
Forest major (>10) Eucalypt woodlands

Land use

Land use % of IBA
nature conservation and research major (>10)
rangeland/pastureland major (>10)

Land ownership
Largely private land; also protected areas managed by state government (Department of Environment and Climate Change).
