Muara Kendawangan

Site description (2003 baseline):

Site location and context
Located on the north-west corner of Kalimantan, it is a swamp area which still covered by degraded swamp forest, and degraded dryland heath forest also present. Around 40% classified as non forest area in 1996 (Wetland International 1997) Forest damage also caused by fire in 1997. The vulnerable heath forest and swamp along of Jeloi River in eastern part is still in good condition, and considered as one of the most important wetland in West Kalimantan (Wetland International 1997).There are two small lakes along the Jeloi River, Gelinggang Lake and Belida Lake. Most of the area is part of logging concession, although the concession is not active. In provincial land use plan, this area is alocated for agriculture, but the land suitability is in question.Generally, this area covered by freshwater swamp, mangrove, grassland. Proportion of each habitat is unconfirmed, due to a big change caused by forest fire in 1997. Before the forest fire, the habitat condition probably better outside the reserve, but the current situation is need to be assessed.

Key biodiversity
Formerly this area has high level of bird diversity. Survey on January 1994 confirmed the important value of this area (Noor & Enis 1995). There is no information about bird in Jeloi area, but probably the bird diversity same as Muara Kendawangan. This area probably has the same important value as Tanjung Puting, but more information is still needed.

Non-bird biodiversity: Hylobates agilis, Nasalis larvatus, Pongo pygmeus, Presbytis rubicunda, Helarctos malayanus and Dugong dugon at seashore. Scleropages formosus and Crocodylus porosus also live in this site (Noor and Enis, 1995).
