Mountains of Naxos


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Mountains covered with phrygana and to a lesser degree with maquis and forest. Human activities include livestock-farming, fishing and hunting. The pastures are managed with fire.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for passage and breeding raptors and species associated with scrub.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from overgrazing, fire and the use of poisoned baits. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Partial International None346 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Fanari/Filotiou Naxou, 346 ha). Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Troulos/Filotiou Naxou, 1,200 ha). 480 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Za/Koronou Naxou, 480 ha).
