Mount Mavrovouni, Larisa


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A mountain between the Thessalian plain and Aegean Sea. The north-east facing slopes are well forested, whilst the south-western slopes are dominated by scrub.



Key biodiversity
The site is important for its resident raptors and forest species. Breeding birds include nine of the 21 species that are restricted in Europe to the Mediterranean biome (when breeding). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila clanga (wintering), Aquila heliaca (non-breeding).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from infrastructure developments and more intensive forest management. The area is a candidate SAC.

National Partial International HighPart of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Dasia Platania/Skitis-Amigdalis-Potamias, 804 ha). Part of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Mavrovouni/Sklithrou, 1,091 ha). 0 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Polidendriou, 3,530 ha). 17,000 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Oros Mavrovouni, 36,454 ha).
