Site description (2008 baseline):

Key biodiversity
Two globally threatened species were recorded-Thyolo Alethe and East Coast Akalat

Habitat and land use
Mt Mabu's habitats could be broadly divided into woodland, Ridge, and wet forest. The mixed woodland and ridge area are dominated by Pteleopsis myrtifolia, Trema orientalis, Erythrina abysinica and Ptrerocarpus angolensis. The north-eastern slopes at c. 400-550 m have extensive areas of overgrown commercial tea plantations, resulting in a rather homogenous 'tea forest' habitat composed of c. 5m high canopy of tea trees over an open undersotry of heavy lef litter. Subsistence cultivation (Principally Maize) ended at c. 730 m some 200m below the lowere edge of the evergreen forest.Theres some limited exraction from the forest of honey and hunting through gin-trapping ( for Bushbuck, Bushpig, three Duiker and Leopard) and snaring
