Site location and context
Mt Dapiak and Mt Paraya lie to the east of Mt Malindang (PH107) in north-eastern Zamboanga del Sur Province, and rise to 980 and 1,186 m respectively. It has been reported that much of Mt Dapiak is denuded of forest, with only small patches of remnant secondary vegetation, but nearby Mt Paraya is reported to have approximately 80% intact forest. Much of this forest is likely to be lowland in type, with montane forest near the mountain peaks. However, little reliable information is available on this area because of its relative inaccessibility. The native Subanen tribe lives in these mountains.
Several of the threatened and restricted-range species of the Mindanao and Eastern Visayas Endemic Bird Area have been recorded on or near to Mt Dapiak, mainly during collecting expeditions in the 1950s, including Philippine Eagle. It is possible that the forests in this IBA will prove to have a similar avifauna to those of nearby Mt Malindang (PH107) and Mt Sugarloaf (PH109), and it could prove to have a more intact lowland avifauna than these other IBAs.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The extraction of timber is reported to be the major problem on Mt Paraya, and presumably also on Mt Dapiak.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Mt Paraya is a proposed provincial park as well as proposed for protection under the NIPAS. A Protected Areas Survey Assessment is required for this area as a prerequisite for endorsement to the NIPAS.
Surveys are required in this IBA, to investigate both the extent and quality of the remaining habitats and the current status of the threatened and restricted-range birds and other biodiversity.
Mt Paraya has been proposed as a provincial park by Zamboanga del Sur province as well as proposed for protection under the NIPAS by DENR Region 9.
