Montsech and Montgai mountains

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2011 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus NT resident (2010) 1 pairs B2, C2, C6
Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus EN breeding (2008) min 8 pairs A1, C1, C2, C6
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos LC resident (2009) 8–10 pairs C6
Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus LC resident (2008) min 15 pairs C6
Red-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax LC resident (2006) 115–220 pairs B2, C2, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2011. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 poor very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus 1 / 2 (pairs) 50 poor
Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus 5 / 5 (pairs) 100 good
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos 9 / 7 (pairs) 100 good
Falco peregrinus 8 / 10 (pairs) 80 moderate

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now whole of population/area (>90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Pollution happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Natural system modifications likely in short term (<4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
