MG060
Menabe forest complex This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 1999 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Madagascar Grebe Tachybaptus pelzelnii EN resident (1993) present A1
Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor NT non-breeding (1993) present A1
White-breasted Mesite Mesitornis variegatus VU resident (1993) present A1, A2, A3
Giant Coua Coua gigas LC resident (1993) present A3
Coquerel's Coua Coua coquereli LC resident (1993) present A2, A3
Olive-capped Coua Coua olivaceiceps LC resident (1993) present A3
Madagascar Crested Ibis Lophotibis cristata VU resident (1993) present A1
Malagasy Pond Heron Ardeola idae EN breeding (1993) present A1
Madagascar Jacana Actophilornis albinucha EN resident (1993) present A2
Madagascar Sparrowhawk Accipiter madagascariensis NT resident (1993) present A1
Henst's Goshawk Accipiter henstii VU resident (1993) present A1
Schlegel's Asity Philepitta schlegeli NT resident (1993) present A1, A2, A3
Sickle-billed Vanga Falculea palliata LC resident (1993) present A3
Sakalava Weaver Ploceus sakalava LC resident (1993) present A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 1999. The most recent assessment (2017) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2017 poor very high high
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor
Forest - good (>90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Climate change and severe weather happening now most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Transportation and service corridors happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) low
Energy production and mining happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Pollution past (and unlikely to return) and no longer limiting some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented high
