Site description (2009 baseline):
Site location and context
Located in the centre of the Hengduan mountain range between the Nu Jiang and Lancang Jiang rivers. Meili Xueshan is a holy mountain to Tibetans. It has 13peaks of above 6,000 m including Mount Kawagebo (Kagebo) which, at 6,740 m, is the highest peak in Yunnan. No systematic ornithological surveys have been conducted in theIBA, but it is believed to be of ornithological importance.
Non-bird biodiversity: No information.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Not an official nature reserve but protected as a scenic site and by cultural traditions. This IBA was designated under the World Heritage Convention in 2003 as part of the ‘Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas World Heritage Site’.
