Site description (2009 baseline):

Meihua Shan is a forested area in western Fujian, at an average elevation of 900 m and with over 40 peaks above 1,000 m. The nature reserve extends 20 km from east to west and 19 km from north to south. Forest cover is 60%, and the main vegetation types are subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest, mixed coniferous forest and bamboo stands and scrub.

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Tsuga longlbracteata, Fokienia hodginsii and Bretschneidera sinensis. Animals include Macaca mulatta,Manis pentadactyla, Lutra lutra, Viverricula indica, Viverra zibetha, Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera pardus, Cervus nippon, Selenarctos thibetanus and Capricornis sumatraensis. There were records of Panthera tigris amoyensis in the 1950s.

Established as a provincial-level nature reserve in 1985, and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1988.
