Megalo and Mikro Livari lagoons, Istiaia


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A small coastal wetland near Istiea, fed by freshwater springs and streams, with two lagoons, and riverine forest.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for passage and wintering waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (6-10 passage individuals), Falco naumanni (passage).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are illegal building of holiday houses, dredging and infilling at Livari, expansion of arable land, logging of the alluvial forest, hunting, and grazing pressure. The area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National Low International None1 ha of IBA covered by Natural Monument (Istiaia Remnant of Swamp-forest, 1 ha).
