Site summary
This floodplain area includes a southern portion of the geographical unit of Východoslovenská rovina. This intensively used landscape has a high density of dead river arms, shallow wetlands, canals and alluvial meadows. Along the rivers relatively intact alluvial forests can still be found. Dominant habitats are intensively utilized as agricultural land, meadows and pastures. The area is used more for agricultural purposes than forestry. The only significant recreational activity is sport fishing. The area is considered to be the most important Slovak site for a number of water and riverine birds, as well as for species nesting in meadow and xerotherm habitats (mainly sands). This site is a nesting area for the largest Slovak populations of Grey Heron, Night Heron, Great Bittern, Little Bittern, Black Tern, Marsh Harrier, White Stork, and Little Crake. The main threats to birds here originate from intensive forestry. The site is proposed as an SPA.
