Meadows and lakes in the foreland of the Alps in Salzburg and Upper Austria


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
This area contains nine sites with wet meadows adjacent to five lakes. The size of individual sites ranges from 25-270 ha. Originally situated in the inundation zone of the lakes, most of the meadows have been affected by drainage in the past. The area is used for forestry, agriculture and recreation.



Key biodiversity
A good area for breeding species in humid grassland, particularly Vanellus vanellus (70-81 pairs), Numenius arquata (13-19 pairs) and Gallinago gallinago (20-25) pairs.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is subject to high levels of disturbance from recreational use. Afforestation, drainage and agricultural intensification are additional threats to the site.



Protected areas
National High International Partial640 ha of the IBA covered by seven Nature Reserves, total area 1,102 ha. 105 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Oichtenriede, 105 ha). 298 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Wallersee-Wenger Moor, 298 ha).
