Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
An area of mountains, with wooded valleys, scree, rocky slopes, cliffs, moorlands, alpine meadows and permanent lying snow.



Key biodiversity
An important site for breeding and passage raptors. The site is a major migratory bottleneck, where more than 20,000 raptors pass on a regular basis (including Pernis apivorus 14,000; Milvus migrans 4,500).



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The development of open-air sports and other recreational facilities threaten the site.



Protected areas
National Partial International Partial3,028 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Mantet, 3,028 ha). 1,177 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Vallée d'Eyne, 1,177 ha). 2,185 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Prats de Mollo La Preste, 2,185 ha). 3,930 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Py, 3,930 ha). 5,200 ha of IBA covered by Biological State Reserve (5,200 ha). 4,650 ha of IBA covered by 3 Hunting Reserves (St Martin; Py; Hauts de Carança; total area 4,650 ha). 9,350 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Py, Mantet et Prats de Mollo, 9,350 ha).
