Marine waters along the continental part of Lithuania

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
An offshore area in the Baltic Sea between 55°50'N and 55°55'N.

Key biodiversity
The site is important for wintering and migrating waterbirds, especially wintering seaduck (including important numbers of Clangula hyemalis, Gavia arctica and Alca torda), totalling more than 20,000 individuals on a regular basis. The number of wintering Polysticta stelleri varies according to different sources (300-1,200), but 800-1,000 individuals is the most recent estimate.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
In the near future, the Butingë oil terminal will be constructed near Palanga and oil pollution is therefore a potential threat.

Protected areas
National Partial International NoneThe southern part of the IBA falls within a marine strict nature reserve (Pajûris Regional Park).
