IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis VU passage (2006) 500 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC passage (2006) 5,000 birds B1i
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea LC non-breeding (2006) 1,000 birds A4i, B1i
Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina LC non-breeding (2006) 750 birds B1i
Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo LC non-breeding (2006) 1,500 birds A4i, B1i
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC non-breeding (2006) 340 birds A4i, B1i
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus LC breeding (2005–2006) 70–165 birds B2
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT non-breeding (2006) 250–350 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa NT non-breeding (2006) 2,500 birds A1, B1i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2006) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2006 good medium very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
