Manyas Lake (Kuş Lake)

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN winter (1995–1996) 20–34 birds A1
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia LC breeding (1989–1995) 200 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax LC breeding (-) 1,500 pairs A4i, B1i, B2
Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides LC breeding (1989–1996) 100 pairs B2
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT winter (1992–1996) 52–117 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT breeding (-) 35–40 pairs A1, A4i, B1i, B2
Great White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus LC passage (-) 1,500–5,000 birds A4i, B1i
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC breeding (1989–1996) 150 pairs A1, B1i, B3
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC winter (-) 58–315 birds A1
Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo LC breeding (-) 2,650–3,000 pairs A4i, B1i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2016) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2016 moderate high high
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity high
