Site description (2004 baseline):
Site location and context
The site is part of a remote forest area between Abava and Venta largely unaffected by drainage and intensive logging. It is covered by predominantly coniferous forests with several small streams, beaver ponds and peat bogs. Listed as an IBA since 1994 [2, 3, 1], with the total area gradually decreasing. High protection level: there is a 75.5% overlap mostly with two restricted nature reserves, Venta valley and Mangene forest, a candidate SPA.
