Site description (2012 baseline):

Key biodiversity
Mangaia Kingfisher (VU) and Cook Islands Warbler are resident. Wintering site for Bristle-thighed Curlew (VU).

Habitat and land use
Upraised limestone island with volcanic centre. Population of 572 living in three villages. Outer ring of makatea mostly undeveloped. The coral reef has not been surveyed to determine its status.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Rats, cats and other invasive species. Habitat destruction. Over-harvesting.
