Site summary
Malá Fotra is an extensive mountain in the western part of the Carpathians. It has well-preserved, natural ecosystems of diverse habitats, species and communities. This area represents the highest occurrence of ecosystem diversity; including geological, geomorphological and climatic features. The area has a prevalence of coniferous and mixed forests and is used mainly for forestry and hunting. Recently, the tourism industry in this area has grown (siding, trekking, paragliding, ski alpinism, etc.). Malá Fatra is an important site for breeding species of rocky habitats, sub-mountainous country and many spedes of forest birds. It is one of the five most important sites for Peregrine Falcon, Eagle Owl, Rock Thrush and Wallcreeper in Slovakia. The main threats to the area are unregullated recreational and touristic activities, changes in traditional farming and abandonment of land. The site is proposed as an SPA.
