Site description (2004 baseline):
Site location and context
The IBA comprises Mae Jarim proposed national park, which is adjacent to the international border with Lao P.D.R. and adjoins Doi Phu Kha National Park (IBA TH011) to the north and Sri Nan proposed national park (IBA TH008) to the south. The topography of the site is characterised by rolling hills. Higher elevations support hill evergreen forest, which covers c.35% of the total area, while lower slopes support deciduous dipterocarp forest and mixed deciduous forest, which cover c.61% of the site. In addition, some coniferous forest occurs along drier ridges. Several rivers and major streams originate within the site.
Mae Jarim proposed national park forms part of a contiguous forest complex, which also includes Mae Jarim Wildlife Sanctuary (IBA TH009) and Sri Nan proposed national park (IBA TH008). Together, these three IBAs support a significant population of the globally threatened Green Peafowl Pavo muticus, estimated at under 100 birds. Within Mae Jarim proposed national park, Green Peafowl has been recorded at two localities. In addition, it is the only site in Thailand with a recent record of the globally threatened Blackthroat Luscinia obscura, a rare winter visitor to the country. Mae Jarim proposed national park also supports populations of two globally near-threatened species: Great Hornbill Buceros bicornis and White-rumped Falcon Polihierax insignis.
The site qualifies under criterion A3 because it supports nine species restricted to the Sino-Himalayan Temperate Forests (Biome 07), 41 species restricted to the Sino-Himalayan Subtropical Forests (Biome 08) and 16 species restricted to the Indo-Malayan Tropical Dry Zone (Biome 11).
Non-bird biodiversity: No information is available about other globally threatened species at the site.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Agricultural encroachment, in the form of shifting cultivation, has affected a small proportion (c.2%) of the site. Other major threats are forest fire during the dry season and hunting of Green Peafowl (including egg collection).
