Macauley & Haszard Islands

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2014 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Black-winged Petrel Pterodroma nigripennis LC breeding (1988) 2,500,000 pairs A4ii
White-necked Petrel Pterodroma cervicalis VU breeding (1988) 50,000 pairs A1, A4ii
Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica LC breeding (1988) 40,000 pairs A4ii
Procelsterna cerulea NR breeding (1988) 10,000 A4i
A4iii Species group - seabirds n/a breeding (1988) 2,500,000-4,999,999 pairs A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2014. The most recent assessment (2014) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes likely in long term (>4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Geological events likely in long term (>4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low
